I seem to be being asked this question a lot lately! So instead of sitting there, re-writing my response, I thought i’d copy and paste it, and post it here! (duh!). So here is my personal recommendation on the subject:

Four string or five string bass?

Well, putting it simply:

The extra string offers more low-end. That’s more bass. We tune our 4 strings-E-A-D-G-. The additional string (which sits above the E string) is a B.

It comes down to personal preference as to if you’ll need this extra low. Five strings are used a lot in heavier types of music, like metal, but also in musics like reggae, which benefit from that low sound.

I always advise beginners to start on a four string, just to make life a bit easier. This is no way a rule, though. All it means is that you will have to learn the notes on the extra string, and apply theory to the extra string (if you go in for theory!) Of course, you’d have to consider the fifth string in technique as well (some people find it hard to stretch and get round the fifth string). Once you have these down, and have an understanding of how the extra string can be used, you’ll find you’ll have more options for expression…

So all in all, it comes down to personal taste. I’d always advise trying a five string and a four string in a shop before you buy! Give it plenty of time on each…
