A bass I bought, not as a first bass but because i played it and liked it so much that when i saw the price I bought it . An Ibanez Iceman, I got it for 300 pound with a hard shell case, fist hand. They go for more than that too though I think. For a very first bass maybe it is too expensive but if you are looking for something the next step up before you shell out for something huge. Ibanez make really good quality for money basses. I prefer it too all my basses except my 'ray.

For a beginner, like myself, I stuck to Dean's salespitch about their Playmate EABC 4-string model. It sells at cheapest at $199 on most on-line shops. What's more, an amp is not required to start playing with it right off the bat. It is a good instrument for both beginners and experienced bass players. I hope this helps, guys.

That's funny, your recommendation is my first bass. I'm already jonesing for the next thing, though. And the Stingray was always the bass I thought I'd end up with. Not good enough to justify the cost yet, though.

Thanks for this advice before I go and do something silly.

In the US a lot of people love the SX basses, available at Rondomusic as a cheap, well-made instrument.

i bought a dean edge playmate for christmas, $200, really cheap, but it came with a tuner, a bass, a amp, three picks, a cloth case, a strap, and other odds and ends.
it's been playing really good so far. nothing to fancy but it's great to practice and jam with.

Another inexpensive bass that i would recomend... is Yamaha. I just picked one up for around U.S.$175.00 it has a flame maple top... nice smooth neck.. great action.. good looking.. decent sounding bass guitar.. i got a BB
G4 which i think is one of the low end bb series guitars..By the way found your bass lessons on you tube very informative... thanks
