…making better bass players with Kris Rodgers A.K.A Dmanlamius

I’ve been playing bass for for about fifteen years now, and put a lot of work into my practice. Ideally, I try and practice for a couple of hours a day, but back in the days when I was gigging and touring in my band, I would literally get up, practice all day and then get into the van for a gig…
I’ve always been interested in how to maintain finger strength for long periods. A lot of my playing involves a lot of stretches etc, which cover a number of frets. (My hand and tendon excercises which can be found in the link below) are definatly a foot forward in a positive direction concerning tendon strength, but I have found something else that has benefited me massively.
I’ve been “trying out” the gripmaster now for about two months. It has spring loaded buttons for each particular finger, is very light, and fits in the palm perfectly. The importance of having a button for each finger is massive when it comes to maintaining chords, and other methods which require a bit more endurance.
I just literally carry it around with me, and go back and forth finger to finger. You can take it anywhere, because it is so small and portable. Have it at work, at school, at home. Oh, it doesn’t squeek either, which is always a bonus when you are standing in the bus queue…
All in all, I have seen a big difference in my finger endurance. I can’t emphasize how great these things are. They are very reasonably priced for what you will benefit and get out of them in the long run as well. I feel that these are a must have for anyone that is to take their playing seriously! (Don’t get the light, though. I hear they are a bit TOO light. I’d recommend the medium.)
Also check out these callus caps that sit on top of the gripmaster. Simply put, these caps coupled with a Gripmaster are an easy and effective way to build and maintain callouses, which will stop your finger tips from being too painful!

I bought this product a year ago and I’ve gotta say it works wonders! Plus there are even stronger versions than the medium tension model which gives you 7 lbs. of resistance per finger. There is a black model which provides 9 lbs. per finger, and a gray one that is recommended for those who already have strong fingers which gives a startling 11 lbs. per finger! But here is something I found more interesting:
Rough Rider Callus Caps
That’s right, callus caps, they snap right on to your grip master and help build up your calluses. I thought mine were pretty tough, but damn did these things hurt at first. Plus at just $6 you really can’t go wrong.
cheers,
John

I have the light and the medium – unfortunatley I overdid it on the medium too soon and gave my self tendonitis and couldnt play for 4 weeks. So lesson number 1 is DONT OVER DO IT!

Kris – do you get any commission on these ? For what they cost, looks a good deal (better than a powerball anyway, which normally kills my forearms so much I can’t roll a ciggy for 20 mins after..), but Amazon.com will charge more for postage than the product. If you aren’t getting any commission, will grab some from amazon.co.uk

Sorry about late reply, Sergio. Been tucked up in bed with a cold, lol!
Ok, I get a tiny tiny amount of comission for people buying these. Like, 0.01 or something. My advice to you would be check your local sports store, rather than buy off amazon. If they don’t have them, they’ll be able to get them in at no extra cost.
Take it easy with these. The idea isn’t to build up muscle, but to slowly strengthen your tendons.
