Ok, here is my conclusion:
Initially, the strings were fine. For a few days, actually. I had been doing a lot of lessons, plus a fair amount of studio time within that week as well.
Seven days later, and they are very jaded again. I think they maybe even more jaded than when they were before I boiled them! I’m not sure it’s the amount I was playing (about 20 hours this week) that caused this, or just the fact I boiled them. They also have an oddness to their sound now as well. It isn’t “bad” as such…just “different”.
So my conclusion is that boiling strings is fine for a very short period of time! Maybe to do a gig, or some studio work (although I probably still wouldn’t recommend doing it…just in case of a snap). As i have updated in the video, make sure you have a BACK-UP set if you are going to try this yourself. Only attempt if your strings really are on their last legs…
Next experiment: Vinegar/spirits.

I never felt like it was good for the strings. It cleans them, but it’s not good for them. I would rather use a cheap new string than an old boiled string.
Great post!

In addition to what Tucson says above, i’d like to mention that these strings now feel HORRIBLE. Yes…defiantly a short term option, only my friends…

I tried this once and had exactly the same result as you. The reason is simple. You get lots of dirt and grease embedded in the strings and this is one of the things that makes them sound dull. This can be boiled away. The other is that over time bass strings stretch and stretch and stretch because they are under tension. Eventually they become so stretched that they lose their elasticity and sound dull. No amount of boiling will help this. I wonder whether all of the dirt and grease lubricate the strings somehow and keep them from terminally stretching which is why they have their short swan song of zingyness for a week or so? Anyhoo, go out and buy some new ones if you want zingy.
