Yeah, the knuckle kinda part of your thumb on the string. But is it supposed to hit where you’d usually finger walk? Or slightly higher towards the fret board?

Ok, hitting in different places, will get a different sound.
I normally hit anywhere inbetween where the fretboard starts, and just before the pic-up. That gap is my normal target…
