Hi Kris, thanks for the great post. Just wanted to touch base: I’m 63yo and have an Ernie Ball Stingray that I bought new 8 years ago. It has sat idle all that time. The 1st string broke though no use.
I’ve just got the urge to learn to play and came across you on Youtube.
Thanks for this post on how to prevent injuries: it’s a great place to start.
I’ll now move to the next video in the series.
Keep up the good work: Alf

Hiya, Alf!
Well, I hope the bug sticks with you this time. It’s worth sticking with, and becomes a very rewarding thing. You just have to get past the learning curve for it to pay back

Thanks for doing this. Not a lot of people who give of themselves for free. The exercises are very important, I know i’ve had hand surgery. I had carpal tunnel from my job.

Thank you Kris! I play drums and bass and have actually had to knock off the drums for a time because the numbness in my hands made it utterly impossible to like hold the sticks through 5 minutes of playing! Thanks very much for this!

Hey Kris,
stumbled across some of your lessons on youtube there last week. I have just bought a bass again after not playing for more then 15 years so I’m back to square one and thanks to the internet and people like you it has become much easier to refresh and just start over again.
Thanks a lot for your efforts there mate and all the best for you!

Thanks!
I’ve just start playing the bass (like last tuesday, December 20th) and this will be good to prevent carpal tunnel sydrome… I didn’t even knew playing bass could cause it, but thanks!

I know I am a little late to this party, but wow. Thanks a lot for these amazing little stretching ideas. I have JUST recently began feeling the pain in my hands and wrists from playing video games, texting on my phone, and of course playing bass/guitar (and I am only 22 years old). I plan to do these before and after everything I do from here on out and I hope they make a difference. Thanks again!

hey Kris
when I do those finger excercises my finger-ankles crack pretty often and I heard, that this causes a kin of arthrosis over the years. true/false? problem or not?
regards Ken

Hello, Ken!
Ok, I have heard that as well. But recently, I read that it’s not true. Also, I have been clicking my knuckles and fingers for years, and have seen nothing yet.
However, I’m not a doctor, Ken. I have absolutely no right, nor qualification to advise you on this. Everything I know about it comes through my personal experience.
If you DO ask a doctor about it, please come back here and tell me what they say!
All the best

I try to warm up with a grip master device, should this be incorporated in my finger exercise sessions?

I’be been playing bass for over thirty years now and have been concerned with the potential of CTS especially after playing fast tempo(170-200 bpm) stuff for hours on end. I have yet to experience any numbing(that I can feel….uh oh…) in my hands but I am grateful to have run across your site and exercises. The stretching regimen will become part of my daily practice ritual starting tomorrow! Thanks!

Hi, Kris. I am new to your site and Bass playing and I have a queston regarding your hands and Bass playing. Here it goes: Is it good to crack your knuckles for Bass playing?
Thank you (your lessons are good)

Hiya, Jude!
Well, I am no Doctor. Sometimes I hear it’s bad, and sometimes I hear it’s good? I’ve been clicking mine from an early age, and so far I’m ok.
But…that doesn’t mean it’s ok. My advice would be to seek professional advice about this.
Tell me how it goes!

Hiya, Guy.
My advice would be to seek professional advice concerning this. I’m not a doctor, and wouldn’t want to give you wrong advice that would do you damage.
However, the exercises hear were given to me to do by a physio, so they will be fine!

Yes. Any warming up is good. Especially before gigs!
